The world has grown noisy.

But the rhythm of sailing, the sound of water, the wind on our face offers peace, calm, focus, strength, confidence and accomplishment.

It balances the noise, the distraction, the anxiety.

It is why we sail.

Our minds are focused as we sail. The daily tasks provide the sort of flow that athletes seek to experience. Mental clarity follows and with that a sense that the movement of sailing is one with the sailor on the best of days. Calm and clarity.

Now add in the sprinkle of adventure that can’t help but open the mind with its new experiences, cultures, ideas, people and lands. Add personal growth into the self-care recipe of the benefits of sailing.

Not every day on the water is the perfect day, but it is the day that you learn to listen again, to work together again with your fellow sailors. It is the day that nature teaches us to react quickly to ever-changing circumstances that demand we stay in the moment. Our interpersonal skills and teamwork needs grow again amidst a noisy world that has sometimes given these skills little attention or respect.

Sailing teaches us to be resilient.  We get back up. We try again.  We simply begin to learn and to grow all of this because sailing opens our eyes to the beauty in nature, our place in the world, however small, is understood.

Sailing quiets the world. Get out there. Sail on.

We made marine history when we launched the first Balance 526 in 2013, creating a brand-new category in the sailing industry – performance luxury catamarans. Our high-performance luxury catamaran didn’t even require a professional crew to operate or maintain. Together with our invention of the VersaHelm and Carbon Cross fabrications, we set a new standard for excellence in catamaran design and fabrication. We’ve been leading innovation in the catamaran industry ever since.

“I think the Balance 526 represents an important moment in the history of multihull design and evolution…there was something missing in the marketplace that Phil recognized: a high-performance voyaging cat that an experienced couple could take anywhere…finally, we have that catamaran a couple can really sail well.”

– Tim Murphy, Judge, Cruising World Boat of the Year 2017

Now it’s time to do it again. Meet the Balance 540.

She’s a stunning evolution of our ground-breaking 526, winner of Cruising World’s Import Sailboat of the Year in 2016, and first to finish in the 2023 Cape2Rio race, and so many more races and voyages. Her owners have sailed the globe over 500,000 nautical miles since her introduction.

We’ve drawn on those sailing achievements, taken careful notes, listened to our many talented owners, and invested hundreds of hours thinking about innovation while sailing on our catamarans all over the world. We utilized all of these elements to design and craft the new Balance 540.

The Balance 540—a mid-size bluewater catamaran designed to deliver the ideal blend of speed, comfort, and liveability is nestled between our Balance 502 and 580. It offers a meaningful step up in space and capability without sacrificing the agile performance and ease of short-handed operation Balance Catamarans are known for.

Though just under two feet longer than the 526 she replaces in our range, the Balance 540 offers a dramatic increase in volume—25% more internal space—thanks to her expanded midships and wider hulls. This added volume opens the door to even greater liveaboard comfort, with flexible layouts that support up to four full king-size cabins and significantly increased storage capacity. It’s the kind of space you rarely find in a performance-oriented catamaran of this size.

The 540’s extended salon and larger cockpit mirror the layout of our flagship 580, including a galley design that brings an increased sense of luxury to life onboard. It has all the style, performance, and finish you’d expect from her larger sibling.

But the 540 is more than just comfortable. She will be faster – estimated at 8 percent increase in speed – than the 526 while offering greater payload capacity, courtesy of a slightly wider waterline and a more powerful rig. Major structural elements built from carbon fiber help keep weight low and her strength high, ensuring a responsive and stable ride in a range of conditions.

Throughout the design process, we prioritized owner feedback and real-world experience. She now sports thoughtful upgrades like higher wing deck clearance for improved cabin headroom and reduced hydrodynamic drag. She carries king-size berths with generous under-bed storage, as well as versatile forward cabins that can be customized as guest rooms, offices, or bunk spaces. Ventilation has been carefully optimized with large deck lockers and multiple opening ports to ensure excellent airflow. Engine and alternator placement have also been refined to minimize noise and vibration.

The Balance 540 embodies everything we’ve learned over the years about catamaran design, sailing, and collaboration with our owners. She’s a yacht that’s not only thrilling to sail but also genuinely livable—a performance cruiser designed to take you farther, faster, and more comfortably than ever before.

The Balance 540 is coming—smarter, sleeker, and ready to redefine luxury performance catamaran cruising.  Stay tuned.

From Cape Town to Canet-en-Roussillon, 7,353 Nautical Miles in 36 Days

The Balance 580 “Swann” has completed her maiden voyage — an unforgettable 36-day journey across the Atlantic and into the Mediterranean. This performance cruising catamaran set sail from Cape Town, South Africa, and arrived safely in Canet-en-Roussillon, France, covering over 7,300 nautical miles in style and comfort.

Here’s a day-by-day recap of this epic voyage — with highlights, photos, and reflections from onboard.

📍 Day 1 – Cape Town Departure

Swann passes through the iconic lifting bridge, leaving Africa behind for the open ocean. The adventure begins!

🌊 Day 2–4 – Settling In at Sea

Gentle breezes and choppy seas mark the early days. The crew begins to find their rhythm as the boat cruises steadily toward Saint Helena.

At Balance Catamarans, performance isn’t just a promise—it’s a proven reality. This past week, two of our performance bluewater catamarans left their mark on the Atlantic, finishing first in two separate ocean crossings.

Catalyst Crushes the ARC Rally

Congratulations to Catalyst, a Balance 526, and her owner David, for an incredible performance in the World Cruising Club’s ARC Europe rally from Bermuda to the Azores. Catalyst was first to finish among all boats, first multihull across the line, and first in Multihull Division A—a clean sweep! The crossing was completed in just eight days, an impressive feat by any standard and a testament to the speed, balance, and seaworthiness of the 526.

You can learn more about the ARC Europe rally here: ARC Europe Event Page

Eliza Jane Leads the Salty Dawg Rally

Hot on the heels of Catalyst’s win, Eliza Jane, a Balance 482, finished first in the Salty Dawg Rally from Bermuda to the Azores just a few days later. Another fast, confident transatlantic passage that highlights why Balance owners trust their boats to go the distance—quickly, safely, and in style.

These wins aren’t just about being first—though we certainly love that. They’re about proving what Balance Catamarans are built for: fast, comfortable, owner-driven bluewater sailing. We’re incredibly proud of both crews and honored to see our designs leading the way across the world’s oceans.

Balance leads. Others follow.

Congratulations to Catalyst, Eliza Jane, and their intrepid owners!

When people say it takes passion to build something real, people roll their eyes because they have heard that before. Passion is the secret ingredient, the pitches on everything from microwave popcorn to cell phone apps scream!

But, what if the word passion is only part of the story? What if passion means lots of people working side by side to build something great?

What if the word passion is understood to mean that action by which creativity slams into  hard work?

What if passion is the only word to explain the alchemy of science and design mixing together to create something that is not only beautiful, but fast on the sea, that provides a home and an adventure every single day?

Could it be that the word passion is the balance between so many other things that bring an idea to life? That’s what Phil Berman, founder of Balance Catamarans thinks  as he reflects on what it means to welcome so many new voyagers to the community every year since he founded the company in 2013.

Berman spent some time thinking about all this recently while sitting on the Commissioning Dock for Balance Catamarans in Cape Town, South Africa, where the Balance 464, 502 and 750 are all made by teams of talented people. The Balance 526 and 580 are made in South Africa as well but a bit further south in St. Francis Bay where the first Balance Catamaras were launched so many years ago.

Berman says that with every visit to South Africa, he is in awe of what has been accomplished in the decade plus of building catamarans. Recently updated figures reveal that 77 Balance Catamarans are now gracing the waters, with even more innovative vessels consistently being launched. On platforms like AIS and PredictWind, our boats are visible as they dynamically sail across the globe. Proudly, by the close of this year, our fleet is anticipated to grow to 100,

While it is easy to spin a story of passion and use the numbers to prove the case, Berman points his evidence in another direction – the incredible individuals who dedicate each day to constructing these magnificent boats. Their dedication, love, brilliance, and craftsmanship breathe life into each vessel daily. That’s what passion is: all these skills, talents, innovations and people blended together to create something amazing.

Impacting Livelihoods Beyond the Waters

Balance Catamarans isn’t just a name; it’s a life, a career, a passion  for hundreds of tradesmen and women in South Africa. Each individual associated with Balance’s production plays a pivotal role in its  narrative and growth. Recently, we celebrated community and teamwork by participating in  the Cape Town Cycle Tour – the world’s largest with over 30,000 participants making this grinding endeavor so amazing. Balance hosted a  team of 22 participants. Everyone finished!

A Heartfelt Gratitude

Purchasing a Balance Catamaran extends beyond mere ownership; it’s an investment in the lives of numerous dedicated artisans in South Africa. Each purchase creates avenues for sustainable livelihoods, fostering growth and stability within our community. Hence, a heartfelt acknowledgement goes out to all our patrons for their invaluable contribution and to every diligent soul at Balance Catamarans striving daily for excellence.

In conclusion, to those who choose Balance Catamarans, thank you for being part of this incredible journey, and to our magnificent team, your dedication crafts our legacy.

Balance Catamarans continues to sail towards new horizons, powered by passion – yes, that word again –  hard work, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

Time to Sail Away

The world has grown noisy. But the rhythm of sailing, the sound of water, the wind on our face offers peace, calm, focus, strength, confidence

We’re proud to offer a behind-the-scenes look at the VersaDrive hybrid system—Balance Catamarans’ next leap forward in clean, efficient propulsion. Developed in partnership with Integrel Solutions, this cutting-edge technology is transforming the way sailors manage onboard energy and propulsion, delivering a smarter, quieter, and more sustainable experience on the water.

Main Dashboard: Power at Your Fingertips

Join Jason Crawford from Integrel Solutions as he walks us through the core of the system: the intuitive main dashboard. From here, sailors can monitor and manage every aspect of the hybrid drive, seamlessly switching between drive and generate modes on either hull.

The display provides real-time data on energy flow—how much power is being sent to or drawn from the batteries—ensuring you’re always in control and making informed decisions in any conditions.

Tailor Your Sailing Experience

With the VersaDrive system, flexibility is built in. You can set discharge and charge limits, fine-tune minimum speed thresholds, and toggle between engine and electric drive—allowing for a customized performance based on your cruising style or the day’s weather.

Dial back for a slower, quieter cruise or ramp it up when you need more thrust. The electric motors eliminate vibrations and engine noise, offering a whisper-quiet ride that redefines what luxury sailing feels like.

Performance Meets Longevity

Efficiency isn’t just about speed—it’s about preserving energy and extending the life of your systems. Like cruise control for your hybrid system, VersaDrive’s adjustable limits allow you to manage output carefully, ensuring slow, consistent battery charging and discharging. The result? Optimized motor performance and extended battery lifespan—essential for serious passagemakers.

Smarter Energy Management

Switching to “generate” mode demonstrates the hybrid system’s true potential. With a single engine powering both shafts while simultaneously recharging the batteries, the VersaDrive maximizes energy output without sacrificing range or fuel economy.

Whether you’re crossing oceans or anchoring off-grid for days, the system’s manual and automated controls give you the tools to match power usage to your needs—efficiently, quietly, and sustainably.

A Future Built on Innovation

At Integrel Solutions, ongoing development is central to the VersaDrive’s evolution. With every update, we’re refining how hybrid systems integrate into high-performance yachts—delivering even more intelligent power management without compromise.

Whether you’re new to hybrid propulsion or looking to deepen your understanding, we invite you to experience the future of sailing firsthand.

The port engine drives the propeller and generates enough power to run the starboard electric motor. One engine driving both hulls!
In Neutral, the engine generates power without driving the boat.
Both E-Drive motors are driving at 800 RPM—with the diesel engines completely shut off. Pure electric power in motion.

Together, Balance Catamarans & Integrel Solutions we’re charting a new course—one where performance, silent propulsion, and sustainability sail hand in hand.

At the end of January 2025, Balance 526 Hull #29—Väster—splashed in St. Francis Bay alongside the very first Balance 580, Windigo. For proud new owners Kirk and Catherine Brunsson, it marked the start of their very own journey at the helm—after years as devoted members of the Balance community. With over 7,000 nautical miles under their belts crewing aboard other Balance catamarans, they were more than ready to take the helm of their own performance bluewater cruiser.

I have the incredible privilege of joining them—not just from the early days of build and commissioning, but through sea trials in Cape Town, and now, across the Atlantic Ocean. I’m writing this update from a quiet anchorage off the remote island of St. Helena, where we’re taking a short pause before setting sail again—this time toward Fernando de Noronha.

While I’ll be sharing a full-length video and story once I’m back on land and back in the editing chair, I wanted to give you a sneak peek of what this incredible passage has looked like so far.

Journey Highlights

A Viking Send-Off
Kirk and Catherine – strong Nordic ties –  made their departure from Cape Town in true style by donning horned Viking helmets as Väster set sail. Spirits were high and the excitement was contagious.

Day 1: Easing In
After a light start with barely a breeze, we motored for about 6 hours at 6 knots in search of wind. Along the way, we enjoyed sunshine, gentle swells, and sightings of playful seals along South Africa’s West Coast. By the evening, the wind had filled in—and we were sailing under starry skies.

Despite the soft start, we logged over 215 nautical miles on Day 1.

Days 2–7: Flying
For six straight days, we had strong winds and a steady sea state. Even sailing conservatively—with a second reef and jib—we averaged over 220 nautical miles per day. At times, Väster surfed along effortlessly at speeds up to 20 knots, with a top speed of 23 knots recorded.

This performance was all the more impressive considering she was fully loaded with:

  • Four months of provisions
  • Full diesel and water tanks
  • Toys, gear, and spares
  • Catherine’s full professional music sound system

Even under load, Väster proved she’s not just a very comfortable liveaboard—she’s a true high-performance machine.

Days 8–9: Back to the Calm
As we neared St. Helena, the wind faded and the seas calmed. We motored the final three days and dropped anchor on Day 9. Waiting in the harbor was Windigo, the first Balance 580, and the two crews shared a celebratory dinner to mark the moment.

Life on St. Helena

This remote island is unlike any other—rugged, welcoming, and full of character. During our stay, we’ve taken care of routine boat maintenance, explored ashore, and even hosted a live music night at the St. Helena Yacht Club. Picture this: a full sound system set up under the stars, islanders and sailors gathered together, and music echoing across the mooring field. A surreal and unforgettable moment.

What’s Next?

We’ll be lifting anchor soon and heading west to Fernando de Noronha. The Atlantic is far from finished with us yet—and neither is this story.

I’ll be sharing the full video chronicle of Väster’s shakedown cruise once I’m back on dry land.

In the meantime, be sure to:
